Engaged Learning Plan

Introduction and Plan

Introduction: My engaged learning plan highlights my original plan of how I was going to get involved in extracurricular activities in my second semester of my undergraduate studies with what I have currently accomplished.

Original Engaged Learning Plan: The three main extracurricular activities or opportunities I have participated in Peer-led-team learning and VIDA. PLTL is a program that designs recitations for science classes. I have really enjoyed being a Chem-C 106 leader. This opportunity has allowed me to grow as a leader. This position has taught me how to be a proper leader and deal with various classroom interactions. VIDA has informed me of how I can help my society by improving medical treatment. This organization strives to serve communities that are less fortunate and need the proper medical care. VIDA recruits volunteers for a clinic. This club has allowed me to engage and learn about so many different civic opportunities. However, the organization that I am looking forward to becoming part of is the Life Health Science Internship. This is a research experience that will allow me to grow on my track to becoming a physician. This research position allows me to innovate in the field of science and health. I have applied to this program, and I am waiting for a chance to receive an interview for this program. Through the Honors College, I have joined the Honors societies of PES and ALD. These organizations will allow me to network with other Honors college scholars. This program will allow me to receive scholarships that will help me to continue to grow as a student. Also, I have heard that the meetings are really fun. These societies will also let me know the faculty and staff of the Honors College and get to know them.

Dates

February 2022 and February 2025

What I have accomplished: Ever since I started my undergraduate track, engaged learning has been an essential priority. As a pre-medicince student, I was always told that I needed to become involved in many extracurricular and engaging activities. In my second semester, I became involved with two main organizations. I became a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma (ALDPES) Honors Society that recognizes first-year students for academic success. I also became involved in the chemistry department as a Principles of Chemistry II recitation leader, a position that I held for two semesters. That same summer I became involved with the IU School of Medicine Herman B. Wells Center for Pediatric Research through the Medical Physicists, Engineers, and Scientists Clinics prepartory program (MPESC-PREP) doing cardiogenesis research with Dr. Weinina Shou. It was a fruitful experience in that I was able to present my work in a symposium at the end of the program. I came back to the research center the following summer to perform work with another principal investigator, Dr. Nathan VanDusen of the devolpmental cardiology department.

Reflection: My original plan is very similar to what I have accomplished. The main difference in the plan was that I pursued my research opportunities through the school of medicine and not the Life Health Sciences internship. My keen outlook on getting involved in extracurricular engaged learning has benefited me in many ways. The most major effect was improving my resume for professional school applications. The research that I conducted and my background in peer-led learning have helped boost my CV.
